Back to School, Back to a Routine Rest

While the calendar says the year is winding down, September often feels like it’s just getting started. With summer vacations behind us and fall routines setting in, it’s the perfect time to reset and refocus

Today marked the first day back to school, and with it comes that unmistakable sense of transition. September has always felt like a natural reset point in the year, a shift from the looser rhythms of summer into more intentional routines. Even if you don’t have children heading off with backpacks, most of us spent over a decade in classrooms ourselves, so the season stirs up that deep, unconscious association: fall = the start of something new. Pair that with workplaces picking up momentum as vacations wind down, and it’s no wonder this month carries a fresh-start energy. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the shortening days and cooler weather only add to that sense of seasonal reset.

Fresh Start Without the Pressure

If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know I’m not a fan of the “all-or-nothing” messaging we so often hear: New Year, new you!Summer body challenge! … or other one-shot lifestyle overhauls.

If those approaches work for you, that’s amazing! Truly, keep doing what works and skip the rest of this note. But if you’ve ever made big promises to yourself only to stall out after a week (or three), you’re not alone. In fact, you’re in the majority.

Why Big Overhauls Don’t Stick

The research around behaviour change doesn’t support dramatic all-or-nothing shifts. They might sound exciting, but they rarely last.

What actually makes a difference over time? The less “sexy” option: small, steady, sustainable changes. They don’t grab headlines or sell flashy programs, but they do build real, lasting results.

Small Changes = Big Wins

Here’s why they work:

  • Achievable: A 10-minute walk is often easier to fit in than an hour-long workout. When life gets busy, smaller goals still feel doable.

  • Flexible: You don’t have to be “perfect” for small changes to add up. One skipped day doesn’t derail the whole plan.

  • Habit-forming: Habits take energy to build, but once they’re in place, they run on autopilot. That’s true for the good ones and the less helpful ones, this is why obvious intentions around the habits we want to keep is so important.

A Back-to-School Reset (That Lasts)

This season offers a natural chance to check in with yourself. Schedules shift, routines settle, and there’s space to layer in one or two small changes that feel supportive.

Maybe that looks like:

  • Walking during your kid’s practice instead of scrolling.

  • Packing your own lunch while you pack theirs.

  • Getting to bed  and waking up even 15 -20 minutes earlier so mornings feel less chaotic.

Each little step builds momentum, and momentum is what carries you forward, long after the initial motivation fades. Over time the little changes stack up and the things that once felt overwhelming to start begin to feel more like something you “just do.”

So if September feels like a reset, lean into it. But skip the pressure of an all-or-nothing overhaul.

Instead, give yourself the gift of one sustainable step at a time. Because when you stack enough small shifts in habits together, that’s when the big, lasting changes really happen.
