Reflecting on the Journey not the Destination
Summer is one of the better seasons for positive mental health.
From the benefits of sun exposure, time outdoors, and time in nature. To increased opportunities for social connection, outdoor physical exercise and more. There are many reasons to celebrate the longer days of summer.
This August has been an extra special time in my world. With the celebration of some bigger milestones. It was 6 years ago that I became a mother.
Watching a little one grow up is mind-blowing at times. The sheer number of changes in what feels like such a short period of time. I am still processing that my little one is not a toddler anymore. Seeing kids grow up we get to witness their rapid evolution and changing of identities over and over.
We can have these evolutions and changes in identities as adults too. Yet they are not guaranteed. They are not as rapid or obvious.
We have to choose to keep growing and evolving or we stay stagnant.
Yet when we look back on where we used to be, or even who we used to be, we can see how far we have come.
It is human nature to keep focusing on where we still want to go.
What we still wish to achieve.
It is just as important to look back on how far we have come.
The big breakthrough and sudden miracle shifts are possible at times. They tend to be more exciting and if we are not careful we can get hooked on chasing this type of change.
The drawback is if we get too focused on these big leaps, we can lose sight of the immense power of the small steps. The slow sustainable change.
These โboringโ mico habits are actually the most powerful force for change so the majority of us.
I have realized that I am the kind of person who always needs to be dreaming and working towards something. Over the years I have been working to shift my own focus to the journey. To not get overly obsessed with the destination.
To enjoy and be present in the process of my life.
To make peace with the fact that my to-do list will likely be longer than my lifespan.
To be ok with that and to focus on the process over the outcome.
I am more at peace with this than I used to be. It is still a work in progress and some moments are better than others!
I have carved out a little more space to keep working on some of the dreams I have had in the background for a few years now. Projects inspired by questions such as:
How can I make personal growth and healing more accessible and available?
How to reach as many people as possible?
What ways of creating and serving bring me the most joy?
I believe that it can and should be both. Win-win-win. More to come.
From the bottom of my heart thank you for being a part of this community and journey together.
Let me know what stands out the most for you when you reflect back and honour how far you have come in your own journey.
Wishing you a peaceful and present reminder of your summer.
With love & gratitude,
Katie
