Embracing the In-Between: Navigating Change with Patience and Grace

Change is rarely linear. It doesn’t follow a step-by-step process where one phase neatly concludes before the next begins. Instead, life unfolds in overlapping cycles, feeling stuck, letting go, stepping into the new. Some days, we may feel firmly in one phase, only to find another aspect of change taking centre stage the next. The journey is fluid, often messy, and deeply human.

We tend to overestimate how much we can accomplish in a single day or week while underestimating the growth and transformation that can unfold over years. If I could go back, I would tell my younger self she has more time than she realizes. She doesn’t need to work so hard or worry so much. And even now, I remind myself of this truth. Growth isn’t about achieving perfection, it’s about deepening into new layers of understanding. I’ve come such a long way that I am, in many ways, a different version of myself. Yet, I find myself working with familiar lessons at a new level. In another five years, another decade, I hope to be even more patient, present, and at peace.

We are multi-layered, beautifully complex beings. There is so much beauty in the mess of the journey. Try not to measure your progress in short increments, give yourself the grace of a long-term perspective. When you look at where you want to go, also take time to appreciate how far you’ve already come.

The Weight of Decisions

The older I get, the more I appreciate the significance of time. Every choice we make, what career to pursue, where to live, whether to stay in a relationship or move on, is a decision that shapes our path. The sheer number of possibilities can feel overwhelming. We often agonize over making the “right” choice when, in reality, there is rarely one singular right path. Sometimes, multiple options could be good, yet each choice comes with a trade off of pros and cons.

In the early days of my personal growth journey, I often spiralled into anxiety over big decisions. I lost sleep, overanalyzed every detail, and talked incessantly about my choices, hoping for clarity. What I didn’t realize at the time was how much my unconscious beliefs were influencing my indecision.

Looking back, I have immense compassion for that younger version of me. Because of her struggles, I now have the wisdom to make decisions that align with who I truly am. I’ve learned to recognize when change is possible, what I can control, and when it’s time to accept reality and move forward.

Questions for Reflection

  • Where in your life do you feel stuck or unsure?

  • What are you ready to let go of?

  • What new phase are you already stepping into?

  • Where do you want to evolve further?

The Wisdom of the In-Between

There are times when it’s necessary to linger in the unknown.

Give yourself time to pause when:

  • You’re deepening your self-awareness. Major life decisions require a strong sense of self. Taking time to understand your core values, strengths, and blind spots ensures you aren’t making choices based on external pressures or fleeting emotions.

  • You’re in recovery. If you’re dealing with mental health challenges or addiction, your focus should be on healing. Taking on too much too soon can be overwhelming.

  • You’re grieving a loss. Whether it’s the end of a relationship, a job, or the passing of a loved one, loss requires space to process. In the early days of grief, even basic tasks can feel exhausting. It’s okay to slow down and allow yourself to heal before making major life changes.

When It’s Time to Move Forward

While honouring the in-between is crucial, there comes a time when waiting becomes stagnation.

Signs you’re ready to step forward:

  • You’ve processed your emotions and feel more stuck than introspective.

  • You have clarity on what you want but are hesitating out of fear or waiting for the “perfect” moment.

  • You recognize that hesitation has turned into procrastination.

At this point, the next step isn’t about waiting for motivation—it’s about taking action. Even small steps create momentum.

Stepping into the New

  • Make space for change. Even a few minutes a week dedicated to your next steps can create powerful shifts.

  • Focus on sustainability. Long-term progress matters more than quick, dramatic changes that lead to burnout.

  • Practice self-compassion. Break your goals into smaller steps and celebrate progress along the way.

Embracing change isn’t about striving for perfection. It’s about honouring the cycles of growth, learning from past versions of ourselves, and trusting that we are evolving exactly as we’re meant to. Wherever you are in your journey, give yourself grace. You are already further along than you think.
